What is CPU?

The processor is the main component of the computer, which executes individual programs and directs the work of other parts. It is also called the central processor unit (CPU-central processor unit), while when it is located in an integrated circuit, it is called a microprocessor. The central unit (processor) has been used since 1961.

The processor consists of three main components: the arithmetic-logic unit (ALU), where all logical calculations are performed; the control unit, which decodes, synchronizes, and executes program instructions, and the working memory (RAM), which enables the storage of data and programs that enable the computer to work. All components contain registers, which represent memory spaces reserved for special purposes.

The central unit is built into a small ceramic box with metal triggers on the side. These triggers have the function of interconnecting the processor chip with other chips on the printed circuit board. Inside the ceramic case is the chip itself, a slab of silicon with dimensions of several mm². on this small surface are located several million transistors functionally connected to each other.
The type of processor that is installed in the computer determines the speed of execution of various instructions. Nowadays, processors can execute tens of millions of instructions per second.
