What is HTML5?

This article belongs to the “for beginners” category. Using simple words, we will talk about the fifth version of HTML, which is currently under development. And despite the fact that HTML5 is still far from perfect, its performance surprises many.

As you may know, HTML (HyperText Markup Language) – is a markup language for web pages. Its main purpose is to translate the information provided in the form of readable content. Mainly, because of HTML, we see the Web as it is, we see its color, beauty and multi-functionality. Then the new version of HTML is without a doubt a big event. It will stay in the hearts and minds of the internet community for quite some time.

First, let’s analyze the differences between the fifth and fourth versions. Of course, we will do this in short, in order to keep things simple.

So, the first thing, it is worth mentioning a fact – HTML4 development was completely completed at the end of 90, while work on HTML5 started relatively late – around 2005. The developers of the new version of HTML, focused mainly on compatibility with the most popular browsers – As a result, no revolutionary changes have been made in terms of web page design, but the possible capabilities to present part of the content have been significantly expanded.

For example, these new HTML5 elements are currently at your service: nav section, header, footer and article. Before, it was not just one element – div. Standard img, supplemented with audio and video tags. One of the most important id attributes was filled with tabindex and repeated. Also, outdated elements such as font and center were removed.

Since the main focus was to avoid conflicts between HTML5 and outdated browser engines, the new version is equipped with the option to completely ignore the new mapping rules defined in HTML5. This in no way affects the visualization quality of the uploaded content.

Now let’s focus on the structure and markup language in HTML5.

As you know, the old version is completely based on the div element. In other words, everything that was connected to sidebars, panels, navigation menus, chapters, etc. was controlled by this element. HTML5 is equipped with alternatives which, beyond any doubt, make the structure of the website more visible and functional.

header (not to be confused with header) – you can specify not only the header of the page, but also subheaders.
nav – element is designed exclusively for navigation links which is very useful for creating site navigation and page links.
Section – this element is intended for public use. For example, you can use it if you want to set a special header or paragraph for the default text block.
article – with this element you can place independent fields on a page for textual content. For example, to highlight important publications from the archive, current news, recent posts on the forum, etc. In addition, the article element can be used in a traditional way – that is, to specify part of the content of the page.
footer – the last element on the page or “final block of the section”. This element is displayed as you may have thought like a football. In this part of the page you can place news reports related to the content section mentioned above (for example, copyright), among others.
Now a few words about some innovations that are related to block-level elements. So the top innovations are:

aside – this container can be used to textual information considered secondary or additional. For example, citations, notes separated from the main content, columns with explanatory text, etc
dialog – container that allows you to organize dialogs.
Figure – container that allows you to describe any imagined text signature.
And now a couple of words about multimedia elements.

For a long time it has been expected that sooner or later the following elements will be incorporated – and as predicted here they are – video and audio. The main goal of these innovations is to better integrate multimedia content into the main part of the web page. Another reason to use these elements is to avoid third-party products (plugins) necessary for viewing and listening to multimedia content.

As for interactive features, HTML5 will have new elements to be proud of. Here are some of them:
